Do you want to make cleaning easier to manage? Of course, you do, and usually, it’s possible with today's products and cleaning tools, which are so much more efficient than they used to be. Not to mention, the web is filled with hacks and tips – like this very blog – that will help you envision better methods of cleaning. But, who thinks of these methods, exactly? And, why are you just hearing of some of them now? Well, we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but some of these cleaning hacks won’t do much in the long-run. Here are 4 that are more so myths, and we suggest skipping them altogether!
Myth #1: Extra Detergent Will Produce Cleaner Laundry.
More is not always better when it comes to cleaning, or in this case, laundering. Adding extra laundry detergent or softener makes it harder to rinse away all the sticky residues. If that residue is left in fabrics, it works as a dirt magnet and turns fabrics dull. When it comes to cleaning, stick to the instructions. It’s advisable to choose the best quality cleaner for the job, read the directions, and measure appropriately. This way, your clothing is sure to come out cleaner and last longer down the road.
Myth #2: Hot Water Kills All Germs.
Hot water can kill some bacteria, but it has to be really hot – as in 212 degrees F. It also must be exposed to the contaminated surface for several minutes. Since most hot water heaters are set at an average of 120 degrees F, you shouldn’t expect hot water directly from your tap to kill germs on its own. Instead of relying on water directly from here, add a disinfectant, like chlorine bleach, pine oil, or phenolic solutions, to the mix, and you won’t be disappointed in the results!
Myth #3: Sanitize Sponges in the Microwave.
Like we discussed in the previous section, high heat can kill some bacteria. When it comes to sponges, however, research shows that any remaining bacteria will recolonize in the sponge and can potentially become even stronger. The length of time needed to kill all the bacteria lurking in the center of a sponge using the microwave method will result in an incinerated sponge. A better choice is to use disposable wipes, cotton, or microfiber cloths that can be tossed in the washer after every use.
Myth #4: Place a Magic Eraser in Toilet Tank to Remove Stains.
Yes, those little white erasers are indeed magic at removing soap scum on bathtubs and crayon marks on walls. They do nothing to clean your toilet tank, though. Worse yet, they might even compromise its flushing mechanisms. The scrubbers are made of melamine foam and need your elbow action to work. They do not dissolve or contain any bacteria-killing and dirt-lifting components. So, consider this tip nothing more than a myth and skip it!
